If you reside in Cape Town and wondered what Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def is doing here, we’re here to tell you that he has made the city his home. His relationship with Cape Town started almost four years ago. At the Music Exchange conference that took place recently, the rapper/actor who was the keynote speaker told the crowd:

I came to Cape Town in 2009 and I was like, ‘Yeah’. I know when the good vibe gets to you. I thought about this place every day when I left. People were like, ‘You’re crazy. It’s light years away. They’re crazy. They’re going to eat you. You shouldn’t go there. I said, ‘I’m going’.

He went on the share details of his ‘crazy’ move saying:

There are some beautiful places in America. I love Brooklyn. New York city needs to thank Brooklyn every day just for existing. That’s how I feel about it. It was a hard thing to leave home. But I’m glad I did.”

He sums up Cape Town and South Africa in one word: “crazy”. Bey is said to be working on a tribute album in honour of the late Gil Scott-Heron as well as other works.
