Fantasy Hip-Hop: Take Your Pick

fantasy hip hop

Ever wondered what it would be like if you could choose your favourite rappers on a team like Fantasy Football? Well if that were to happen, who would be the Top Pick, Sleeper Pick, how would people face each other and what would make a great team would only be a few of the questions that would be asked.

Now for people who may not be familiar with the Fantasy Football world here are some quick tips… Each team has at least 1 Quarterback, 2 Running Backs, 2 Wide Receivers, 1 Tight End, 1 Kicker and 1 Defense. Not to mention you may have more than these in case of bad performances, backups displaying potential, injury, etc. Now if hip-hop had these how would each of these tips equate?

If we are going to have a line up then here is how it would go: QB = superstar rapper, RB = underground/underrated rapper (who are either on the brink of the mainstream or are killing the underground), WR = trap rapper, TE = swag rapper, Kicker = alternative rapper 1 Flex position which means any type of rapper and 1 defense = label you feel would have the most success. In terms of facing each other week to week, like in Fantasy Football, you can compare social media presence, how hot they are, recent mixtapes or albums, guest features or new songs out.

By using these standards one may wonder who would play put position, well CHEKA Digital is here to help you out.

Some example of QB’s include but are not limited to Jay Z, Kanye, Drake, Lil Wayne, T.I., Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. These are the household names who would easily be some of the top selections. With the RB’s, the options are so vast that examples go from Big K.R.I.T., Joey Bada$$, Dom Kennedy and Talib Kweli to your local rapper. Ok now the WR is the diva of the group, the one with the most flash and in terms of hip-hop the trap rappers exemplify this so some examples would be Ace Hood, 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, Chief Keef, Future, Waka Flocka Flame, etc.

Now the Tight End position could cause the most controversy depending on the terms of a ‘swag rapper’. Some may include A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, YG, Lil B, Soulja Boy and Migos. The rest could be interpretation depending your merit. Now another position that is vast is the Kicker. I figure that would be the alternative rapper slot because Kickers in the league are considered the outcast but there work is so respected they are still important. Some may include Chance The Rapper, Kid Cudi, Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt Azealia Banks and SpaceGhostPurrp. As for the defense that would be the labels whether indie or mainstream such as Atlantic, YMCMB, GOOD Music, Cinematic Music Group or Roc Nation.

Now that we got the positions figured out, how would players face off. Even though Fantasy Football is only during the season, I figured this Fantasy Hip-Hop should be all year long to include everything a rapper goes through from album/mixtapes, tours, awards, etc and each person would face each other each month to make for fair competition. This would also declare who was the hottest rapper since this goes throughout the year because the more consistent the artist is, the better he will be for you similar to Fantasy Football. There is also the injury which in music terms would be death, jail or taking a break from the music world which would ruin your entire team. Well for some, at least.

Overall the game would be fun and trusting a rapper to stay relevant would be interesting to watch. But then again, one can only fantasise, and at the end of the day that is what it’s all about.

So make your picks and let us know who make up your Fantasy Hip-Hop drafts.
