Over the next 4 weeks, 37mph will be releasing previously unreleased music and hot collaborations for #MusicMonday on CHEKA Digital in anticipation for his #tranceSet EP which will be released exclusively on this platform on July 28. The first single off the EP is a banging collaboration between 37mph and JR titled “Tough Guy”.
In the words of 37mph:
I guess every superhero needs his theme music, right?!The story of “Tough Guy” dates back to December 25, 2010 . While experimenting with my first MPC2000XL I began demonstrating how to make a beat to my cousins. I had been listening and playing soul music for my family at the time so I had Lou Rawls’ “Dead End Street” on my Serato. So I began chopping it.Almost a year later, I started a film-scoring project with DiPrente Films. I had read the script for the movie Blitz Patrollie almost twice and I still didn’t have a theme song for the film. For those who haven’t watched it, the film is a buddy-cop movie starring David Kau and Joe Rasdien as the lead characters. Somewhere in the movie, Ace (played by David Kau) makes a statement about trusting his gut feeling. I sampled that and kept playing that line. I had to trust my own gut feeling about what I wanted the film soundtrack to sound like. Then, accidentally, I played “Tough Guy” during a spotting session with the director and producers; they fell in love with it instantly. I loved it too for the movie – so I changed the whole score of the film to fit this one track’s theme.JR had two songs on the soundtrack and I called him in to write this one with me. I hadn’t been in studio with JR since we worked on “So Kool” which was on Kool Forever, and the last time we worked in studio we did “Gata Le Nna”, “So Hott” and “Mathata” . This collaboration made working together quite an interesting experience. The song “Tough Guy” for me is a reminder to always go for what I believe in, regardless of what people say or even self-doubts; to just go out and GET IT!!
