“The battles that have surfaced on our shores are more of a dirty laundry show-off than articulate emcees showcasing their lyrical dexterity. Emcees need to be fearless with their skill, and when called upon they should be ready to back up the things they spit in their raps.”

We have all heard the “sex sells” / “hype sells” / “controversy is best policy” (okay last one was made up) sayings, and although many may differ with the accepted wisdom theories, there is some truth in it.  People’s curiosity shoots up at the sight of controversy. So how do we tie that into hip-hop? The old fashion way; Battle.



  1. Well it depends what we classify as a battle. Is it beef or just a typical battle where 2 or more Mc’s trade punchlines/verses? Scrambles for Money started up a month or two ago if it’s the latter. What I’m getting from this article is that the author wants artists that are on radio and have songs and albums coming out on a commercial level to make overt diss records. Coming up in cyphers have stopped being a thing for a mad minute. From the examples you mentioned Kaydo, Skwatta, Pro and Thabs actually came up cyphering. Those are individuals that have battled/made diss records before, so it stands to reason that they would make a diss song, however those guys are old, Pro has established himself as a veteran of the game so he doesn’t “need” to diss anyone. The majority of the artists that SA has on the radio/tv and are celebraties have never impressed on a lyrical level, so why should we expect them to compete in a realm where they don’t have strength. I agree that we do need to be more honest in the industry, but that might not be a luxury artists can afford in one as small as ours. Diss records being a legitimate thing ended in 2005. It’s unfortunate but that’s the game at the moment

  2. this article states some really really true facts, its a reality that we has hip hop lover’s need to understand and roll with. Im in South africa where this genre is as new as dubstep, new is the sense that it actually has value, where people pay to be entertained. So ultimatley we dealing with a small market, or a new market that has a specific amount of buying power, so what does any normal Emcee who by thier own right is “paid”…..they only take care of thier circle, they dont allow other’s to enter the spotlight, its no longer about your lyrical skill, but rather about how many paying gigs you get….sad sad SAD!!!! this isnt Hip Hop just glorified Pop acts that talk with a MIC!!!!
